What you get for that

Lights, sockets, switches — minor works by qualified electricians.

Typical jobs and what they go for

Replace a socket or fit a light fitting£60 to £120
Add a spur with two new double sockets£180 to £350
Consumer unit replacement with certificate£450 to £800

What changes the price for electrical

  • Whether the work is notifiable. New circuits, consumer units and anything in a bathroom fall under Part P and must be certified.
  • Chasing and making good. Surface trunking is cheap. Cutting cable into the wall means replastering and redecorating after.
  • Consumer unit age. An old board with no spare ways or no RCD protection often needs upgrading before anything else can be added.
  • Access to the route. Floorboards, loft access and a clear run to the board decide most of the labour.

What is usually included

  • Labour by a registered electrician
  • Testing and the certificate where notifiable
  • Standard accessories

And what is usually not

  • Light fittings and decorative accessories
  • Plastering and decorating after chasing
  • Building control fees where they apply

The one thing that saves the most money

Ask for the scheme and registration number, and check it on the scheme register. For notifiable work the certificate goes in your house file and a buyer's solicitor will ask for it.

Common questions

How much does electrical work cost in the UK?

$60 to $300 for most jobs, with a median of $180. We do not yet have enough completed electrical tasks in the UK to publish real price data, so the figures below are our editorial estimate from market rates. They will be replaced with platform data as soon as we have enough jobs.

What makes electrical work more expensive?

Size and access are the two biggest factors, followed by urgency. Same-day and weekend work carries a premium, and anything above ground-floor level or requiring specialist equipment costs more. Materials, waste disposal and parking are often quoted separately, so check what is included.

How do I get an accurate price?

Post the job with photos, measurements and access details, and you will get fixed-price offers rather than estimates. Posting is free and there is no booking fee, so comparing three or four offers costs you nothing.

Should I pay per hour or a fixed price?

A fixed price for the whole job puts the risk of it overrunning on the tasker rather than on you. That is why every offer on Taskerama is a fixed total.
